Mythical HTC Droid Incredible 4G appears, disappears

(Credit: Android Central)
Looks like the rumored HTC Droid Incredible 4G is getting more tangible every day. Reportedly, a detailed product page for the fabled device appeared on Verizon's DroidDoes Web site and was then cruelly yanked away.
Android enthusiast blog Android Central noticed the gaffe by Big Red, and plenty of sites followed suit, posting images of the device along with the phone's key specs. In a nutshell, if this latest leak is legit then the hot handset will boast a 1.2GH dual-core processor, 4-inch qHD Super LCD screen, Android 4.0 ICS, and HTC Sense 4.
Likely the best update, though, is the Incredible 4G's LTE connection, which its predecessor, the HTC Droid Incredible 2, noticeably lacked. The leaked price of $299 seems very steep to me and frankly the HTC One S (T-Mobile) with its all-metal chassis and AMOLED screen looks like a better buy at $199.
In any case, the first Droid Incredible broke ground by squeezing swift Android performance into a very compact package that sported a wildly ridged back battery plate. Let's hope this possible new Incredible lives up to its potential.

Video Review – HTC Incredible S Hands On
A short look at HTC’s Incredible S smartphone, running Android 2.2.1 and with a ‘basic’ 1GHz Snapdragon processor. We’ve run it through the Quadrant and Neocore benchmarking tools and taken a look at the unique feature that keeps the Android softkeys upright when rotating the screen. How do they do it? It’s magic!

Latest HTC DROID Incredible 4G leak shows NFC

The HTC Droid Incredible 4G is pretty much a done deal at this point; all we really want to know is when Verizon will release it and for how much. But there’s at least one surprise left for the mid-range LTE phone, and Reddit user Krimit04 found it when talking to a surreptitious Verizon rep. When he popped off the battery cover, he spotted the unmistakable electrical ribbons coming out of an NFC chip. Just don’t expect Google Wallet to come pre-loaded on the Verizon device.

He then tested out Ice Cream Sandwich’s Android Beam feature, and found that it works without a hitch. Other details noted by the Verizon representative were a QHD screen and an available extended battery, which will launch with the DROID Incredible 4G. The HTC MediaLink was also on display, with a rough release date of “May” – that could mean we’ll see the latest Incredible next month.
The DROID Incredible 4G is shaping up to be a modified version of the HTC One S, with (from what we can tell) a similar Snapdragon S4 processor, 4.0-inch screen, and Ice Cream Sandwich with Sense 4.0. Some of the changes include a plastic body with a removable battery, a smaller 8GB capacity plus an empty SD card slot, and of course access to Verizon’s LTE network. These changes have made the design considerably chunkier than the One S at 11.6 millimeters.

Story Timeline

HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE expected to launch with NFC capabilities

A Reddit user was recently able to spend some time testing out the HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE thanks to an unnamed HTC representative.  The Incredible 4G LTE is going to be the next HTC flagship Android device on Verizon.  It has been rumored for quite some time now and nearly every aspect of the device is known.  Today, however, we have near confirmation that it will launch with NFC as the phone was able to perform the Beam function touted in Android 4.0 with NFC.
droid incredible 4g
Several days ago, the HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE was spotted momentarily on the DroidDoes page, implying a release in the coming weeks.  At this point, we expect it to launch in early to mid May for $199 on a two year contract.

Unfortunately, for some, the Droid Incredible 4G LTE is probably not going to launch under the same One series as the One X and One S on AT&T and T-Mobile, respectively.  The rumored specs on the Incredible 4G LTE include a 4 inch qHD touch screen display, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, Android 4.0, Sense 4.0, 1GB of RAM, 8MP rear facing camera, VGA front facing camera, NFC capability, and 4G LTE capability.
The HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE sounds like a solid smartphone option on Big Red, but it lacks the appeal of the larger screen and powerful processor found in the One X and One S.

Hands On with the HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE Extended Battery

The phone is yet to be introduced, but HTCPedia Shop is ahead of the game with the official HTC extended battery and door for the HTC Droid Incredible 4G.

This 2150mAh extended battery and extended battery door from HTC is perfect for those who need that extra power to last the whole day without recharging the HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE smartphone.

One of the most talked about problem with all smartphones in the world is battery life. I do not know one person that says that they are happy with the battery life that comes stock in all of their smartphones. The new HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE that is getting ready to be introduced by Verizon and will be coming with a 1700mAh battery.

That is clearly not enough juice to power a 4G LTE device for the entire day, without a recharge, and Sprint may be getting rid of that problem with the HTC EVO 4G LTE by putting a 2000mAh battery in their new HTC smartphone.

What about the HTC Incredible 4G LTE? Why should they be left having to carry around a charger where ever they go?

Well, I am here to tell you that even before the smartphone is released, I know for a fact, where you can get a bigger, longer lasting battery for Verizon's new HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE. Right here, at HTCpedia shop!!

This 2150mAh extended battery from HTC is perfect for those who need that extra power to last the whole day without recharging. What this extended battery does is give you what you need without being making your HTC Incredible 4G LTE so  huge like you would find in a 3000mAh battery.

Now remember, this is not a after market remake. It is an official HTC product. I compared the weight of the new extended battery for the HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE to the regular stock battery that you would find in the Samsung Galaxy S2, at 1850mAh. The HTC extended battery at 2150mAh was lighter than the GS2 battery. That right there should tell you that it will not change your HTC Incredible 4G LTE by much.

The extended battery also comes with a different back for your HTC Incredible 4G LTE. The battery door that you will have on the HTC Incredible 4G LTE will not fit after installing the extended battery. You will notice two little connections on the new battery door. That is your antenna, do not play with it.

I know what you are thinking too. How will you put a case on a smartphone that has an extended battery that changes the shape from factory size to what you get with the new battery door? It is simple. We sell cases for extended battery smartphones at HTCpedia shop.

Weather you do a lot of surfing, Facebook, YouTube, Navigation, texts, calls, or just to play games, you will need something that will last you a bit longer unless you like sitting next to a wall socket when you use your HTC smartphone. So check out the HTC Droid Incredible 2150mAh extended battery.

HTC One V firmware ported to older HTC smartphones

One of the most fantastic things about Android is its extensive developer support. While iOS may have the edge when it comes to game development, Android by far wins when it comes to custom firmware, also known as custom ROMs. A popular occurrence when a new device arrives on the market is having the new phone’s firmware ported to other similar phones. This is what is currently happening to the cheapest HTC One series smartphone, the One V.
The HTC One V (pictured) has had its firmware ported back to three last generation HTC Android smartphones
Because the HTC One V is so similar in specifications to the slightly older HTC Desire HD, Desire S and Incredible S, porting firmware to these devices is rather simple. The same display resolutions and same generation Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets being key factors here. This ported firmware gives owners of the three devices a near perfect Android 4.0 and Sense 4.0 software experience.
All three devices currently lack camera support under the ported firmware, while Wi-Fi hotspot support is lacking on the Desire S and Incredible S. The current Desire S build also does not support USB tethering just yet, other than these few drawbacks it’s a fully featured Android 4.0 ROM. Plus, you even get the free 25 GB of Dropbox storage and all the other applications updated for Android 4.0.
If you know to flash ROMs then head straight to the Desire HD, Desire S or Incredible S threads to grab the necessary files, if not it is probably best you wait for the official Android 4.0 update that is said to be coming to these three HTC Android smartphones.

Draw Something is more than a social game, it's a window into the minds of others

Draw Something is more than a social game, it's a window into the minds of others

Draw Something is more than a simple Pictionary clone. While it stems off the same concept that has been used over and over, there are no time limits and no punishments for incorrect guesses. These aspects, along with the one-on-one setting, remove any sense of competition from the game. The resulting experience is less a game, and more an insight into individual personalities. I met Mr. Frost in one of my first matches. Over the next few days, we played when we had time. We're about 50 rounds in so far, and we haven't missed a word yet. Our pictures started as silly little sketches consisting of only black and primary colors and evolved into vivid scenes and occasionally hilarious situations. I didn't just get to sit back and watch my own ability grow—my artistic ability has indeed grown, at least by Draw Something standards—I also got to watch someone else grow alongside me. We both started off with the same crude style, but as we played, those styles grew apart. I've found I use a lot of color to illustrate my words, while Mr. Frost puts more emphasis on detail. Neither is better than the other, but it leads to completely different drawings for the exact same word. For “EMINEM”, I'd draw a bunch of candies, while Mr. Frost would likely try drawing the rapper himself. Mr. Frost and I have learned a lot about each other through the way we play the game. I've never met the guy, but based solely on word selection and the guesses we make, I can't help but think we'd get along in real life. When it's your turn to draw, you get the choice between three words Each one is more difficult than the last, but also nets you more coins if your partner guesses it. Mr. Frost and I seem to move straight toward any video game-based word we come across. And if we're stumped, we both often make guesses about the video game universe. Even when those guesses are wrong, we just rearrange the letter bank until we find a suitable word that fits the allocated space. Mr. Frost and I think alike, and our synergy has grown as we've played the game. My experience from Mr. Frost came from a random pairing. You can choose to play with friends, and that's a completely different experience. When I linked my Facebook account and created a new game, I was able to see which of my friends were already playing, and I was given the option to invite others. As new friends picked up the game, I got to see shades of my past. While I've earned enough in-game coins to unlock various colors and shades, my friends were stuck with the same four options I had at first. Without saying (or writing) a word, I was able to show them some of the tricks I've learned, and they – perhaps inadvertently – showed me some new things. Draw Something Draw Something Linking your Facebook account isn't the only way to play. You can use email or a username to find people you know too. You can play a bunch of games at the same time, and you'll want to, because your bank fills with coins each time you get a word correct. These coins can be used to purchase more colors or buy bombs that eliminate incorrect letters from the letter bank. The bombs are nice, but I only found good use for them when my partner really struggled with the drawing. On the other hand, colors enrich the experience, but you'll find a lot of creativity from those who have only the default choices. There's both a free and a paid version of the game. Both versions allow play between iOS and Android users, and they both play identically. The paid version eliminates ads, adds about 2,000 more words, and gives you 400 free coins (you can also opt to buy coins separately if you'd rather not wait to earn them). Those who play a lot may want to put down money for the paid version, as there are only so many times you can stand having to draw Shrek. Draw Something is neither a challenge nor a competition. It's a social game in its purest form. Whether you're playing a close friend or a complete stranger, you learn about who they are. How somebody approaches Draw Something tells a lot about them. Perhaps they have an eye for detail, maybe they enjoy a good joke, or maybe they play in a way that’s completely unique. There are some bad eggs that try to earn a quick coin by simply writing their word. Like the rest, that action alone gives us an insight as to what kind of person we're playing with. The lack of competition and challenge will understandably be a turnoff to many. The rest will discover pure, innocent fun, and an amazing window into the minds of others. gamezebo.com Download free version of Draw Something on HTC Incredible S ™ here :  f.1mobile.com/mobile_software/puzzle/com.omgpop.dstfree_1003006.apk

How to create a masterpiece: Draw Something tips, hints, and cheats

How to create a masterpiece: Draw Something tips, hints, and cheats

Everybody and their mother is playing OMGPOP's rather excellent iOS and Android sketch-'em-up Draw Something, which managed to nab a shiny Gold Award at review. To be fair, it's ruddy addictive. The aim of the game, in case you're one of the three people who's yet to play it, is to grab your durable iPaintbrush (your finger) and create a Rolf Harris-esque masterpiece from scratch. Your opponent then has to guess what your frantic scribblings actually are using the jumbled letters that are displayed on-screen. And that's pretty much it. Oh, before we forget, check out what we think are 20 of the best Draw Something creations. They're absolutely fabulous, dahling. Drawing up a storm In Draw Something, you take on multiple opponents in asynchronous matches, which you can drop in and out of at will. If an opponent successfully guesses your creation, you get the chance to guess theirs. A match continues until somebody gives up. When it's your turn to sketch, you're greeted by a screen that contains three different words to choose from - all of which vary in difficulty: Easy, Medium, and Hard. The amount of coins you earn depends on the difficulty level you choose to undertake. If you don't think you can transform any of the words into a glorious picture, you can use your limited supply of bombs to get three fresh choices. Or you can simply close the app, remove it from your multitasking dock, and then fire it back up again to be greeted with three new words. The choice is yours. Purchase at least one new pack of colours (by tapping the '+' symbol next to your existing colour palette) using the coins you save using that cheeky cheat in the above paragraph. We suggest you stump up the cash for the Mardi Gras package early in the game, for it features a nice selection of colours that you don't have access to from the off. Take your time while you're drawing: this game is a marathon, not a sprint. Don't just blob a ton of colour onto the playing field and hope for the best. A thin black pencil and a little outline can go a long way. Finally, try to colour the objects you're drawing with a high degree of verisimilitude - it makes life a lot easier. Have you ever bumped into a purple hamster in the real word? Thought not. The guessing game There aren't many tips we can give you for guessing your opponents's drawings. To be frank, some of them are shocking. However, Draw Something does give you a helping hand. For starters, the game lets you know exactly how many letters make up the word that your partner is attempting to convey. It also gives you 12 jumbled-up letters with which to construct this word, so you're not entirely on your lonesome here. If you're still stuck, bombs can be used to remove the letters that you don't really need. Cheaters never (read: always) prevail If you're still left scratching your head after you've exhausted the above avenues, there's only one thing left to do: cheat. We don't normally condone cheating here at Pocket Gamer Towers, but there are plenty of ways to dirty your Draw Something hands out there on that thing we call the internet. Firstly, you can simply head on over to the Win Every Game website, which is a website designed to help Scrabble players get one over on their intellectually gifted opponents. Just enter the letters that you've been presented with in Draw Something on this website, and it'll give you a list of anagrams - it's that easy. Alternatively, you can head on over to Apple's App Store and download the aptly named Draw Solver Pro - Cheat at Draw Something! application for the small sum of 69p / 99c [buy]. This application allows you to upload a screenshot of the picture you're trying to guess - complete with the letters Draw Something has given you - and almost instantly receive the correct answer. Just remember: the above method of cheating guarantees your passage into hell. You can download Draw Something as a Universal app on iOS in one of two flavours (or both, if you wish): a 69p / 99c ad-free version [buy], and a free-to-play ad-supported version [download]. Likewise, you can download a free Android version of Draw Something for, well, free [download]. Or you can shell out 62p for the ad-free Android edition [buy].

Draw Something Tops 50 Million Downloads in 50 Days

Draw Something The runaway hit mobile game Draw Something has been downloaded more than 50 million times in just 50 days, according to Zynga. The game passed the 50 million download mark on Wednesday, after launching just two months ago, Zynga said. In its first six weeks alone, the Pictionary-like game, which is available for iPhones and Android devices, had already been downloaded more than 35 million times. "We believe it's not only the fastest-growing original mobile game of all time – 50 days to hit 50 million downloads — but one of the fastest growing web sensations that we’ve seen," Zynga said in a statement. Zynga last month bought Draw Something developer OMGPOP for an estimated $180 million, plus another $30 million for employee retention payments. As part of Zynga, the 40-person team at New York-based OMGPOP will now focus on building new mobile games and continuing to develop its existing titles. "If you haven't played [Draw Something] already I highly recommend that you check it out, it's super fun," David Ko, chief mobile officer of Zynga, said last month on a call with reporters. The game, which is available for free or $0.99 for the version without ads, also just regained its spot as the top paid app in the App Store, knocking off Angry Birds Space. It also currently sits atop the top free and top grossing lists. Since it was launched, more than 6 billion drawings have been created, Zynga said. Interested in some more fun facts about Draw Something? Well, the day the game launched, users created three drawings per second, Zynga said. And, at its peak, Draw Something users generated 3,000 drawings per second. The most popular words are starfish, pregnant, Hangman, six pack, and boom box while the least popular word is latrine. pcmag.com Download free version of Draw Something on HTC Incredible S ™ here :  f.1mobile.com/mobile_software/puzzle/com.omgpop.dstfree_1003006.apk

htc sync

In this video i will go through HTC's syncing software and how it helps HTC android phones

htc sense

What is HTC Sense?

HTC are popular for creating high quality Smartphones. HTC Sense is a mixture of Applications (apps) add ons and services to the Android operating system on HTC devices.
Just to drive that message home HTC Sense are customised additions and services to the Android operating system
(HTC also create Smartphones for Windows devices (WP7) but these do not have HTC Sense)

Different Forms of HTC Sense

HTC Sense comes in many different flavours and is constantly changing and evolving.  Depending on which device you have will dectate which form of HTC sense you have and how many “new” additions and services you HTC Android device may have.  Basically the older your device the less HTC applications and services you will have available.  The current Sense is up to 3.0 and includes new features such as Media Link (see video below)

What does HTC Sense do?

The HTC Sense and Additions come in many forms.

The HTC Sense “Flip your Phone”

“Flip your Phone” doesn’t mean throw it!! A few friends have HTC Smartphones but not one was aware of the HTC Flip Function.
When your HTC Smartphone rings but you don’t want to answer it, just turn it over and it will stop ringing. – Pretty Cool! (The device isn’t called a smartphone for no reason).

Smart Ringer

When the phone is rings you don’t really want ringing in your ear.  If you’re in a library you don’t want loud ringing drawing unwanted attention.  So when you pick up the device the volume of the ringer decrease.  Again Pretty Cool!! It doesn’t stop there!

  HTC – ‘Snore’

Loud Ringer

If your Smartphone is in your pocket or in a handbag the sensors pick up on this and the device rings louder.
Nice!!!  The phone goes quite when you want it to or louder when you need it too.

Your own free HTC Wifi Hub

This is one of my personal favourites as I moved home lately and British Telecom disconnected my broadband a month early and wouldn’t reinstall it without a fee (I’m still angry can you tell!!).
Your device can become a wifi hub for other users around you.  Other users on computers or other wifi ready devices can use your smartphone to connect to the internet.  Make sure you have unlimited internet access on your device or you will get a large bill from your phone operator (I have unlimited internet access on my device and it’s fast).   This is also password protected and uses wpa2 which is helpful.

Weather App

In the UK the weather changes quickly, the weather app is soooo helpful and gives you an update for the next 4 days.  YOu can also choose and set destinations around the world and can check on the weather in most major cities in seconds.  The time and weather also update straight away if you are travelling in another country – Pretty cool once again.

Friend Stream

This is awesome addictive, very lazy and very easy.  This service combines Facebook Updates and Tweets (from Twitter) and Flickr photos on the same screen and it’s part of the home screen set up.  You slide your screen from the home screen and you can view all the updates your friends/contacts have just uploaded, Awesome!
This saves opening your Facebook, Twitter or Flickr app if all you want is a quick update.

Latest Status Updates

When your phone rings it’s possible to have that contact’s picture on your screen.  Great lots of phones do that!  But below the Image is the latest Facebook or Twitter social status update.  This update gives you a little background of what someone has been talking about recently, is thinking or what they are up to!
For example I received a call yesterday from a friend whose status update was talking about the latest football transfers for Liverpool FC.  The conversation sarted with us talking about this topic.  Pretty Cool!

Homescreen Customisation

The amount of things you can create, close, open, and add to the homescreen is pretty clever:
  • You can add multiple shortcuts to music, apps, the weather in various locations and 4 days in advance, a search facilty for the web and your phone, your camera just like a computer desktop.
  • Flick left and right through multiple screens from the homescreen which allow you immediate access to write messages, see your friends/contacts latest social updates on friend stream.
  • Add more feature on 2 additional blank screens waiting for your customisation
  • Minimize all 7 screens to one screen allowing you to choose which feature you require
  • Access your most used contacts immediately
This may sound complicated but it’s very easy to update and implement.  I also forgot to add the customised clock feature you can add and the smart dynamic moving wallpapers you can choose which are all free.

Mulitasking Toolbar

Tap the top of the screen and pull down the multi-task bar.  The bar at the top allows you to keep an eye on:
  • what applications are on at that time
  • whether you have a missed call
  • whether a download has completed
  • tap it for the date and time
  • the battery life
  • 3G connection, wifi it’s all display here
  • Settings, updates, it’s all here!!
Automatic Text Size and Reflow
Need to read some text?  Pinch your fingers together on the screen or pull them apart to resize the screen.  HTC Sense does the rest, the screen resizes the text so it fits and is easy to read and scroll through.  Lovely!

Easy Email Account Installation – Gmail, Exchange, Webmail

Import your e-mail accounts not just one but multiple using Gmail, Webmail and Exchange.  I currently have my work email, personal and a couple of random accounts all on my HTC smartphone.  It makes life easy to manage but they are just as easy to remove if you think you don’t need them anymore

Phrase or Word Look up

Whilst reading some text if you are interested in a word or phrase you can:
  • search through Wikipedia, Google, YouTube, Google dictionary or translate it using Google Translate
  • share the text through any communication option you have on your device e.g. E-mail, Text, Twitter, Facebook, Foursquare, (all social accounts through friend stream).  Or you could be old fashioned and use your phone to call and tell someone :)
  • tap and hold down your finger over the word or phrase, you will then have the option to copy the text to the clipboard.

HTC Footprints

Footprints allows you to create your very own diary/journal which includes photo’s and images, location tags sounds and of course basic notes

Smart Dial and All inclusive Search

Use a name or a number when calling your friends.  Also when using the search on your smartphone one search combs through all your contacts, apps, your content and of course the web.

Very Customisable Screens

Create and change between your perfect phone for work, home or holiday.

Content Organised around your Contacts

All your calls, messages and updates are organised and allocated to the contact related to the content not to applications.

Droid Incredible review
At this point, the HTC Incredible should seem like pretty familiar territory to our readers. We first caught wind of the device in a ROM leak back in December of 2009, and shortly thereafter saw lots of little snippets on the phone that made it clear it was headed our way. Of course, it's a potent combination that's been put together here -- an HTC-made, Verizon-locked device sporting a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU, 8GB of internal storage, 748MB of ROM, a microSD slot (with support for up to 32GB cards), an 8 megapixel camera with dual LED flash and autofocus, 480 x 800 AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, and most importantly, Android 2.1 with HTC's Sense UI on-board. The combo of America's largest (and some say best) 3G network with a super-fast, Sense-equipped Android phone is a match made in nerd heaven. We've seen a near-exact device in the HTC Desire -- basically the Incredible for the European market -- and the internals and screen technology are almost identical to the Nexus One, but the Incredible has a personality that's all its own. So is this the next killer device on the US market? Or have we heard this tune before? Read on for the answers you seek!

Hardware

As you've seen in the leaked photos (and more recently, press photos), HTC and Verizon have teamed up to make what looks like it would be a fairly tame, streamlined device into something decidedly edgier. Instead of going for a predictable smooth back, HTC has given the Incredible a tiered, weirdly angular soft-touch casing which the company says is meant to evoke the styling of a race car. We weren't immediately psyched on the concept, but after getting it into our hands, we'll admit that the decision wasn't completely crazy. It not only sets the device apart from its slate touchscreen contemporaries, but actually gives you a little something to hold onto when you've got the device in your grips. While it looks like this odd decision could add thickness to the phone, when we compared it side-by-side with the iPhone 3GS and Nexus One, they were all about even.

Beyond the racing flair, HTC has added some subtle red highlights on the phone (around the camera lens and on the ear-piece), but it's kept things pretty clean around the sides. Up top there's a sleep / power button on the left-hand side, a standard headphone jack on the right, and along the left side of the phone you've got a volume rocker and Micro USB connector. We definitely miss the inclusion of a dedicated mute switch on the recent crop of Android devices, and we wouldn't have complained about a camera button -- but those two minor niggles are certainly not deal breakers.

On the front of the device you've got that big, beautiful WVGA display, four touch-sensitive hard buttons (here arranged in HTC's familiar home, menu, back, and search configuration), plus an optical trackpad standing in for the typical trackball found on earlier phones. We were pleased to discover that the wonky sensitivity on the hard buttons we experience on the Nexus One were nowhere to be found here.

All in all, the Incredible looks and feels like a modern, sophisticated smartphone with a lot of that masculine edge that Motorola imparted to the Droid along with the curvy smoothness the Droid Eris sports. It's almost like the two devices mated (which kind of makes sense). It's a handsome phone, though we suspect some people will be bothered by the Verizon-inspired tweaks that have been made here.

Display

In general, the Incredible's display was very reminiscent of the Nexus One screen -- that should come as no surprise, they're identical -- though the touch response seemed notably better here, likely a software issue. Because these displays are the same, it means they share the same issues; we disliked the color intensity on the Incredible just as we did on the Nexus One. Reds and oranges, in particularly, look overwhelmingly saturated here, and other colors aren't truly represented. It's just too colorful, if you can believe it. Another somewhat major issue that we struggled with on the Incredible (just as we did on the Nexus One) was the awful screen visibility in bright daylight. We had numerous occasions where we simply could not answer a call or take a picture due to the AMOLED display's poor showing outdoors. In overcast settings (such as the one above) it was usually bearable, and If you crank the brightness all the way up on sunnier days you can get some visibility, though once you're outside and can't see the display, that's a bit of a challenge. In all honesty, we love certain aspects of these screens, but we're perplexed as to why HTC continues to use this same display when it's clear the daylight performance is hamstrung.

Camera

The camera is one of the big selling points of the Incredible. At 8 megapixels, it's obviously one of the highest resolution smartphone shooters on the market -- but is it any good? In our tests, we found the Incredible's camera capable of taking stunning photos -- particularly in daylight settings -- though it also has a few drawbacks that made it a little less usable than we would have liked. First the good though. Unlike other HTC cameras, there doesn't seem to be any color spotting or weird splotches here. When we took a snap, the reproduction was true to the source (or certainly as true as other cameras we've tested). The shutter speed is fairly quick, though by no means Palm Pre quick, even with the review option switched off. You take pictures using the trackpad button, though we would have liked an option to take pics with an onscreen trigger as well, as pushing in the rather shallow trackpad caused the camera to shake a bit. Another issue we had was that the autofocus seemed to shoot first and ask questions later, meaning that on a number of occasions it appeared to have locked on to its subject and snapped a photo, but the results were rather blurry. We had a similar issue with the flash, where we felt it was jumping the gun just enough to blow out a lot of the images we tried to take. Those issues aside, the more time we spent with the Incredible's camera, the more used to it we got, and by the end of this review period (which admittedly wasn't as long as we would have liked), we were getting pretty handy with it. We had particularly good results when we switched the metering mode to centered. The Incredible also does fairly high resolution video -- up to 800 x 480. We would have liked to see a 720p option here, but we realize we're being hopeless romantics. Regardless, the higher res video did a decent, if somewhat pixelated and slightly stutttery, job at capturing a beautiful Brooklyn sunset. We had better results at VGA resolution, but both modes were more than acceptable for basic shooting. Just don't expect this to stand in for your HD camcorder, and you'll be all set.

Sound quality / speakerphone

As you may know, we loved the sound quality on the Motorola Droid. In fact, we think it's probably the best sounding phone we've ever used. We didn't get quite as excited about the Nexus One (tinny, not loud enough), but the Incredible has seriously jockeyed for Moto's spot here. The earpiece on this device is loud and clear, but never painful on the 'drums, while the speakerphone is excellent for both conversations and video / audio playback. It's a really solid speaker which should be more than sufficient for conference callers and voracious media snackers alike. Bravo guys!

Storage

In a somewhat new move for Android phone, HTC has equipped the Incredible with 8GB of internal storage as well as a MicroSD slot which can handle an additional 32GB -- giving you a whopping potential 40GB of space for your goods. We love the idea of a hardwired option for content storage, but HTC has some problems with this implementation. Firstly, many apps currently available in the Android Market which utilize an SD card for offloading data aren't able to see the internal storage at all, which means if you drag some APKs you want to install or want to download some data when you're in an app, you're out of luck. It just simply doesn't see it. This was especially problematic with the NYC Bus & Subway Maps application which requires a download of the train maps, and when we tried to run Nesoid (a popular NES emulator), it not only couldn't find ROMs saved on the phone's storage, but it force closed when we tried to move up a directory! This may not seem like a big deal, but more than once when using the phone we hit this brick wall by not having an SD card present. For the $199 price tag on this thing, it wouldn't have killed HTC or Verizon to throw in even a 2GB card to make the transition easier.

Software

We're not going to go into excessive detail on Android 2.1 and the Sense UI present on this phone, as you can read all the details on the software in our previous reviews of the Desire and the Legend, though there are tweaks and additions here that are worth making mention of.

Firstly, we need to talk about the differences between Android 2.1 with and without the Sense UI. If you've looked at a Nexus One (or own one), then you probably know that the experience with the UI is a mixed bag. Some portions of the software have been dramatically cleaned up, while others seem to be left on the cutting room floor. That's absolutely not the case with 2.1 and Sense. Basically, the Incredible -- and all devices with that combo -- feel like complete, polished, modern smartphones, with none of the perks or features missing. In particular, the homescreens have been massively expanded here, giving you seven screens in which to store icons and widgets... and there are a lot of widgets. HTC has included a handful of its own widgets alongside some of the familiar stock ones which Google offers. Of course, the widgets (and their corresponding apps) which HTC offers generally offer far more functionality than Google's options, and they're also tied together with Sense in way that makes the experience of using them within the OS feel complete -- something notably missing from the Google-only experience. To say that this UI is competitive with something like iPhone OS 3.1 (or 4 for that matter), or Palm's webOS is an understatement; in many ways it's superior to what Apple and Palm are offering.

HTC has done a marvelous job in tweaking Sense in all the right places. The first Sense device we tested was the Hero, which we found to be seriously lacking in the horsepower department, resulting in an experience that was sluggish and disappointing. The performance of the Incredible couldn't have been more opposite. The phone never hiccuped, and scrolling between pages or up and down long lists happened without hesitation. Not only was the UI blazingly fast and responsive -- even with all seven homescreens running heavy widgets -- but as we mentioned previously, the touchscreen response on this phone seem remarkably better than its contemporaries, which leads us to believe that HTC has honed the software in this regard as well. That sensitivity comes in especially handy when using HTC's new pinch feature on the homescreens, which brings up a "card" view of all your pages. The only spot where we noticed any kind of slowdown was when using the live wallpapers -- we're not really big fans of the concept to begin with, but it did seem to make the homescreen frame rate visibly more sluggish. Besides just the cosmetic stuff, HTC has also done seriously heavy lifting in the details department, continuing to improve the music, video, and photo browsing options on their devices, as well as making their fantastic on-screen keyboard even better in this higher resolution version. We found finger tracking and typing speed to be considerably improved, as well as word prediction and correction. Apple, watch your back... HTC has done a damn good job of sneaking up on your tech, and maybe improving on it. We can't stress this enough: HTC has made a really good OS (Android) into a truly amazing and competitive OS. HTC has even improved upon the copy and paste functions of the phone, making the process much more iPhone-like, but expanding on that with options to share and look up your selections via a context menu. Oh, and did we mention the amazing new text flow in the browser? No matter how far you zoom in, HTC's software will reflow the text you're looking at to make it zoomable. It's pretty amazing, actually. We don't know why Google doesn't just collaborate with the company in a more formal fashion, because no one else has been able to deliver this cohesive and enjoyable of an experience with Android.

It should also be noted that the browser on these phones is equipped with Flash lite, though we had lots of trouble getting videos to play on many of the sites we visited (Engadget included). If someone was hoping to convince us that Flash could work on a device like this, consider the job unfinished.

Verizon and HTC have collaborated on a few perks in the OS as well, cleaning up the Google Navigation, er, navigation, and also collapsing Visual Voicemail into the messaging app on the phone, making it easier to get at all your communications at once. We're Google Voice users (which of course perfectly integrates with the device), so we didn't spend much time with Verizon's version. HTC was also happy to point out that its email app supports multiple Exchange, POP, or IMAP accounts with a unified inbox -- something that should please a number of enterprise users. Other bundled apps include Quickoffice, a PDF viewer, HTC's Teeter game, and Peep, the company's built-in Twitter client. A note about this latter application; we're big fans of HTC making Twitter an integrated part of its UI, but this app has the annoying habit of auto-updating your timeline and jumping to the most recent tweet, which makes this "solution" less than appealing. We ended up sticking with Seesmic, and probably will until HTC addresses this minor issue. One other item that cropped up -- which may or may not have to do with this being an unreleased device -- is that we got very different results for apps in the Market. Some programs we were looking for just simply didn't show up in our searches. We had the same problem with the Desire and Legend when testing, and HTC says it's looking into this problem, though we have yet to hear a proper explanation from the company on why this is occurring.

Overall the experience with 2.1 and Sense was a complete pleasure -- using the phone felt fast and efficient. We'd like to point out that we've been running the Incredible without any third party task managers, and without manually killing any applications. Android is designed to multitask without the need for utilities of the sort, and based on Steve Jobs' words from the recent iPhone OS 4 event, we were extra curious to see how this brand new build of the software would fare. We can tell you this -- it hasn't let us down yet, and we're not seeing any sluggish behavior or force closes on apps. If this OS has a need for management of its processes, we haven't experienced it yet.

Network / Battery life

As usual, Verizon's network was outstanding. We know everyone already accepts how rock-solid Big Red's connections are, but we'd like to point out that at various times while riding an NYC subway underground, the Incredible managed to squeeze connectivity out of the big V. In fact, when we first took the phone out of its box we were riding the train, and it picked up enough data to auto-update our time and location. Now that really is something.

As we said previously, we didn't have an enormous amount of time to test this device, but in the handful of days we had, we found battery life to be good, but not outstanding. In comparison to the Nexus One, it seemed to fare a bit worse; we could get through a day, but things were down to the wire by the end of the night. It's obvious that a lot of these widgets and background processes HTC is running are going to put a strain on your device, and given that we're pretty active with our smartphones, something is bound to give. Now keep in mind there's nothing really abnormal about the battery life on the Incredible -- it's just not going to wow you.

Wrap-up

Let's just put this out there: the Droid Incredible is the best Android device that you can purchase in America right now. It's better than the Droid, better than the Nexus One, and certainly beats the pants off of any previous generation handsets like the Eris, myTouch, or Cliq. It's not just a very, very good Android phone (though it is); it's also an excellent smartphone no matter how you cut it. If you're on Verizon right now, you're finally getting really great options for phones, but the Incredible is currently sitting at the top of that heap with a good bit of distance to the next in line. Sure, there are still issues like a lack of quality titles in the Android Market, and if a hardware keyboard is a must, this won't do the job for you. Also, while Sense is truly great on this phone, there may be users who prefer a more streamlined, stripped down experience. Still, if you're looking for an ultra-fast, extremely capable smartphone that has the guts and gleam to go the distance, the Incredible just might be the Droid you're looking for. Yes, we made that joke.
